On Friday July 31, 2009 my husband and I were in our boat on the Erie Canal headed West from Bar Harbor, Maine to Buffalo, NY.
I got a phone call late that night informing me that my father had suddenly became ill and was rushed into emergency surgery.
I immediately started to make plans to go down to Louisiana where my father resided. The next day we pulled into Newark, NY and was greeted by a charming lady, (Sharon) who helped to tie us up to the dock.
At noon that day, I got another call. My father had passed away.
I quickly made a reservation for the following day at 6 am at Rochester airport to fly down to Louisiana in hopes of making it in time for my fathers funeral scheduled for the following day.
The problem was getting to the airport. I tried, car rentals, garages, taxis, trains and buses but none of these were available to me at the time that I needed a ride.
A few minutes later, Sharon came to our boat and said with a positive tone, "If I tell the Mayor, he will come and take you to the airport." I was skeptical about that but hoped that she knew what she was talking about.
About an hour later, the Mayor and his lovely wife, Helen came by our boat to introduce themselves.
Mayor Peter Blandino assured me that he would indeed take me to the airport and that he would pick me up at 4 am to get me there in time for my flight.
The next morning, sure enough, the Mayor was at my boat, promptly at 4 am in the pouring rain with an umbrella and a big smile.
Thanks to Sharon for her quick thinking and compassion. Thanks to Mayor Blandino and Helen for helping me to make it to my father's funeral on time.
Thanks to the people of Newark for electing him. I will be eternally grateful to these people who went out of their way to help a perfect stranger.
