Wayne County, New York is a recreational biker's dream with rolling and scenic county roads, dirt trails under forest cover, old railroad beds open to the public, and the Erie Canalway Trail. On 27 April 2009, Wayne County Life videotaped a bicycle ride to LeRoy Island on Great Sodus Bay, capped off with a beautiful sunset view overlooking Sodus Point and Lake Ontario.

During the 2008-09 "off-season", a new wooden bridge was built connecting the mainland of the Town of Huron to LeRoy Island--the only one out of the three islands on Sodus Bay that can be reached by automobile or on foot. We rode across this new bridge, which is much more bike-friendly than its predecessor. The old bridge was of metal construction and was a bumpy bike ride across the steel grate decking (the type you can look down upon and see the water flowing beneath you). On our ride we were greeted by the sounds and sights of Nature (red-wing blackbirds, cottontail rabbits) as well as Man (fishermen, boaters). Nature finally trumped, showcasing a pink and orange sunset. Each Spring the sun continues to set further northward over Lake Ontario until June, when it begins to retreat in the other direction.

View the Wayne County Life video bike ride across the new Leroy Island Bridge and back by playing the clip below, and enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful Huron backdrop.

  1. Gil Burgess Said,

Nice video, as usual, but, my question is: How did you get the aerial shot as they crossed the bridge?

  2. Seth C. Burgess Said,

It is an interesting angle--I was actually shooting from near Fisher's house. There is quite a rise from the bridge to the top of LeRoy!
