Joseph P. Burgess, son of Gil and Holly Burgess of Newark, was recently promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U.S. Coast Guard. Burgess was commissioned as an officer in May 2008 after four years at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut. He is assigned aboard the USCGC GALLATIN, a 378 foot high-endurance cutter homeported in Charleston, South Carolina. During his current two-year tour, LTJG Burgess has served as a Engineering Division Officer, supervising the maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems.
