Town Supervisor, Brian Manktelow and Village Mayor, Corrine Kleisle have jointly issued a challenge to the residents of Lyons to use their imagination to stage the best picnic setting they can for the 1st Bash Between the Bridges, Saturday, June 5th. Contestants need look no further than the spring and summer editions of their favorite decorating or home and garden magazines for inspiration. Prizes will be awarded for the best of three categories: Most Elegant, Best Traditional and the Tackiest with extra points being awarded to those that bring Lyons or Lyons’ history into the overall setting. The Bash Between the Bridges is a canal community event sponsored in conjunction with regional Main Street Program coordinator, Western Erie Canal Alliance, and the sister New York canal village Main Street Programs of Albion and Lockport. The three programs wanted to celebrate Canalways Trail Day together as a show of solidarity and to promote day trips along the Erie Canal Corridor. The Lyons Main Street Program will use the event to debut its new spring/summer polo shirt colors.
The picnic will begin at 3 pm at the Southside Canal Park and picnic goers are asked to have their picnic setting entries ready for judging at 4:30 pm. For those that want to enjoy catching up with their friends and neighbors but not pack a picnic, food vendors will be on hand and local eateries will be offering “Picnic Specials”. Entertainment, provided by keyboardist Jim Murphy and guitarist Mark DeCracker will run from 3 pm until 7:30. The LMSP will host a picnic basket raffle and a 50/50 drawing.
