Local Tourism Leaders working in collaboration with I Love NY hosted an Israeli Media Familiarization Tour from 13-15 May 2010. The program was organized by Kay Tours, a major tour operator and wholesaler based in Tel Aviv and their airline partner El Al Israel Airlines. The goal of I Love NY staff and tourism officials throughout New York State is to promote exciting and unexpected travel experiences and destinations found along the Erie Canal. New articles, feature, and TV spots have already been committed and the aim is to increase the number of visitors taking Kay Tours throughout New York State with specific focus on the regions being highlighted along the Erie Canal.

Five journalists from prominent Israeli news media were welcomed to New York State on Tuesday and are on a five-day educational itinerary that will take them from Albany to Rochester to the Buffalo-Niagara region. News media represented included:
  • Yedioth Daily Newspaper
  • Marriv Daily Newspaper
  • Laisha Magazine
  • IBA(Israel Broadcasting Authority)
  • Passport News
The group was in the Finger Lakes region from Thursday through Saturday with stops that included Fair Haven, the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, Camillus Aqueduct, Women’s Rights National Park, Murals in Lyons, a Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty dinner at Belhurst Castle, a ride on the Sam Patch, the Lilac Festival, and the Waterloo Premium Outlets.

The group stopped in Lyons and learned about Mural Mania, H.G. Hotchkiss Peppermint Oil history, and the significance of the Erie Canal in our area. The highlight of the visit was the performance of the “Erie Canal Song.”

“These types of media tours are very important to our tourism marketing program,” states Christine Worth. “The exposure that our region receives from story placements in these journalists’ respective media outlets gives Wayne County reach that we could not obtain on our own.”
