State Senator Mike Nozzolio and Assemblyman Bob Oaks announced that the New York State legislature has enacted legislation they introduced to extend the “Lake Ontario Wine Trail,” in Wayne County, allowing more local wineries to showcase their products, grow their businesses and attract more tourists to our region. Senator Nozzolio was the prime sponsor in the New York State Senate (S.2400-A) and Assemblyman Oaks sponsored the bill in the Assembly. Both houses passed the bill unanimously.

“As a representative of the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario region, I know the area is home to outstanding wineries crafting high-quality wines,” said Senator Nozzolio. “The expansion of the ‘Lake Ontario Wine Trail’ will help further promote our local wineries and tourism industry, which is critically important to our economy in our region.

“Wilma and Herm Young, owners of the Young Sommer Winery, are to be commended for bringing this idea to my attention. I thank the Youngs, Fumie Thorpe of Thorpe Vineyards and Joan and Doug Allen of the new JD Wine Cellars for their outstanding leadership and efforts in strengthening the wine and grape industry in New York State,” said Senator Nozzolio. “It was a pleasure to work with Assemblyman Oaks to enact this legislation and create the newly expanded ‘Lake Ontario Wine Trail’ .”

“This legislation was the result of hard work and advocacy by the Youngs, Fumie Thorpe and Joan and Doug Allen, owners of the recently opened JD Wine Cellars in Macedon,” said Assemblyman Oaks. “I’m pleased these two wineries are finally included on this trail and there is now greater opportunity for expansion of the wine industry in our area.”

The prior “Lake Ontario Wine Trail” started on Route 11 in Jefferson County and continued on Route 104 through Oswego and Cayuga Counties, ending at Route 414 in eastern Wayne County, with Thorpe Vineyards, located near Chimney Bluffs State Park. The extension of the trail will now go west on Route 104 to the Monroe County line and also south on Route 350 in Ontario to Route 31 in Macedon and west on Route 31 to the Monroe County line.

New wineries to be included on the trail are Young Sommer Winery in Williamson and JD Wine Cellars in Macedon. You can access more information about the wine trail at www.lakeontariowinetrail.com.
