Our Lyons Main Street Program committees are currently building on the successes of last year’s first “Historic Lyons Fall Harvest Festival” and they are working to make this year’s fall festival BIGGER and BETTER. To kick-off our 2nd Annual “Lyons First” harvest event, we have begun by changing the name of the festival to Pumpkinpalooza! On Saturday, October 23rd, from 9:00 am until approximately 7:30pm, we will celebrate all things “pumpkin” while saluting our local farmers and the agricultural industry on the last day of the Lyons Farmer’s Market season! Again for this year, our focus will remain on a one-day event where all of our Lyons-based organizations and businesses can do some fund-raising under the festival heading of “Pumpkinpalooza”. We have lowered our booth fee this year to $20.00 to attract even more participation than we had last year. This is a day of promotion that will feature the VERY BEST of everything that Lyons has to offer! Although your business may wish to be a part of the event at your physical location (think sidewalk sale, harvest foods and/or crafts or to provide information about your business or services), let us know what you are planning to do so we can list your business as a Sidewalk Sale participant or on our schedule of festival participants and activities. We are especially interested in featuring local farming and agricultural businesses and organizations, folk and blue-grass musicians, square, round, line, or clog dancers as well as local artists to participate with exhibitions, performances and demonstrations. The Pumpkinpalooza Committee is offering sponsorships for all or a part of Pumpkinpalooza for those that wish to promote their business or organization on our advertising materials.
Here are just a few of the new things we are working on to attract festival-goers to Lyons: A Scarecrow Contest for all ages (three age categories – Elementary School, MS/HS [young adult] and over 18), a “Fall into Fun” business and residential “fall” decorating contest, “What the Hay!?” hay bale decorating contest for the 4-H Club and local farmers (see “hay bale art” on the internet), harvesting machinery and exhibition by local farmers, a Sidewalk Chalk Art contest for all ages to promote the Sidewalk Sales for local businesses, a Pumpkin Sling-Shot, “Squash Squish” (pumpkin mush wrestling) and a Family Pumpkin Carving Night on October 21st. Families may bring their own pumpkin (or purchase one from a local farmer at the park) to carve for the Pumpkinpalooza Pumpkin Carving Contest (all entries are $1.00 each and funds go to cash awards). Entries will remain on display at the Village Square Park throughout the festival. We have proposed a screening of the movie, Lady in White, at the Ohmann Theatre as a finale to the days' activities.
In addition to the above, we are working on returning favorites from last year - the “Fall Harvest Express” (the great kiddy “train” ride), Pumpkin Carving Contest, Corn Husking Contest, Pumpkin Bowling, Pumpkin-Sweep Relay, Costume Parade, and our signature event, The Lyons Youth Ambassadors’ “Original Pearl Street Pumpkin Roll” (already being copied by other festivals!!!). The Wayne County Museum of History is also back again this year with "The Haunted Jail" - a local favorite and a not-to-be-missed night of fright! This year, as last, the Grace Episcopal Church is sponsoring a concert Sunday evening, October 24th (featuring The Barn Floor Groovers and Gourdie and Pepon with the Melons), to close our weekend of fall fun. We extend a warm invitation to all of our Lyons-based businesses and organizations to find clever ways to attract festival-goers to spend their money with them! We ask that whatever way your business or organization plans to participate, that you complete a registration form to declare what “fall-bounty” you will offer. Forms are available at the LMSP office (70 William Street, Lyons, New York 14489 – (315) 871-4220).
