Splurch Academy for Disruptive Boys, a New Series from Penguin Books for Young Readers

New Series by Western New York Sister Duo
Western New York natives Julie Gardner Berry and Sally Faye Gardner will visit the Pittsford Barnes & Noble Friday, August 20 at 7 p.m. to celebrate the launch of Splurch Academy for Disruptive Boys, a new series of hybrid novels/ comic books for readers age 8-12.

They will sign the first two books in the series, The Rat Brain Fiasco and Curse of the Bizarro Beetle. Berry, a Maynard, MA mother of four young boys, is the youngest of seven children, originally from Medina, New York. Her first novel, The Amaranth Enchantment, released March 2009 from Bloomsbury Children's Books, to strong critical acclaim. Her second standalone Bloomsbury novel, Secondhand Charm, releases October 2010. Gardner, a New York, NY illustrator, is Berry's sister, and these are her first children's books.

First two books of the Splurch Academy for Disruptive Boys Graphic Novel Series

The series launch celebration, hosted by the Pittsford Barnes & Noble in Pittsford Plaza, 3349 Monroe Avenue, Rochester, will feature readings, signings, cupcakes, and giveaways including washable tattoos, stickers, and bookmarks.

Fans of Captain Underpants and Diary of a Wimpy Kid will love the irreverent humor in the mix of text and illustration in the Splurch Academy series. As sisters and collaborators, Berry and Gardner were able to produce a unique integration between art and text, with both propelling the story in equal measure. Two more Splurch Academy novels are currently in production: The Colossal Fossil Freakout, releasing in early 2011, and a fourth, The Trouble With Squids, releasing soon after.

  1. Julia Said,

Well said. I love these books as much as my 10 yr old does. Why do some families get SO much talent?
