The Lady Reds put their unbeaten home streak on the line against the defending Finger Lakes West Champions from Mynderse on Tuesday and almost pulled off a huge win.
Senior co-captain Allison Wilck picked up her sixth win of the season with a hard-fought victory at first singles – on her birthday – to remain undefeated at home. Co-captain Katelyn Zonneville won her fifth match this season (7-5, 6-3) at second singles, and at third singles, Meghann Dygert lost after a first-set tiebreak loss, 6 to 7.
Newark's Kelsey Rossignol and partner Kelly Eberly won their 1st set, 6-2, but lost a heart breaker in the third and final set, 5-7, to set back Newark's attempt to remain undefeated at home as a team, finishing with a 2-3 team loss in a match that could have gone either way.
“This is a great group to work with,” said coach Jack Fisher. “They worked hard in the off-season with 16 intramural sessions and 10 summer sessions they voluntarily attended. My captains and several other members played in a summer league to try to close the experience gap of their opponents. They are playing outstanding opponents who played on modified teams in some schools that have pee wee programs as well -- three teams in the Finger Lakes League won the sectionals in their classifications and another reached the finals.”
What’s a pleasure for the coach is “that this varsity group also really gets along well together and have had team get-togethers that they arranged. No matter what they accomplish this season, I'm proud of their efforts and attitude towards me and their teammates.”
Volleyball
Newark beat Geneva Tuesday 3-0 (25-17, 25-22 and 25-15) and coach Matt May was pleased. “It was our most consistent match of the year and we were paced by Maria Croft’s 18 assists and Melissa Kline’s 10 kills. Our serving was very strong the whole evening and we recorded nine aces as a team – Lindsey McEvoy had four herself.”
The Reds are 1-3 (1-2 League).
