NORTH ROSE (Sep 20 10) – Monica Wilson had seven kills and six service aces and Ashley Shove added three kills and six service aces as the North Rose-Wolcott volleyball team battered Charlotte, 3-0, for its second win of the season this afternoon.
The Cougars spotted Charlotte a 12-7 lead in the first game, tied it at 13, and collected points in bunches from there on behind strong serving, winning 25-19. That come-from-behind win seemed to take the heart of Charlotte, and the Cougars sailed to a 25-15 win in the second game, highlighted by fives service aces from Wilson when she took the score from 10-2 to 16-2.
NRW coach Kurt Laird saw the body language on the Charlotte side, and started to substitute freely in that second game. Even so, in the third game, the Cougars led 9-3 and 16-6 before finishing with a 24-12 triumph. And in that last game, Charlotte got just two points off its own service.
Laird said he had just moved Shove back to setter, where she has played for three years. “I was going to start her on the strong side this year; we just made the switch back to setter.” The senior was directing traffic from the outset, and was clearly comfortable in her spot on the court.
Lauren Sharp had the ball booming on serves and kill attempts, but ended up getting a lot of net in the process. “She’s trying to do to much,” Laird said. “We’re working with her to just relax and do what comes to her.” She had three kills and two service aces.
But Wilson had the big game, able to give her team an advantage on serves, and effective on kills from the midline to the net.
Laird said the first game, where his kids got behind early, was indicative of how the season has been going.
“We’re always slow starters,” he said. “If we get focused, we can hang with a lot of teams. Today we were able to stay focused in the second and third games, even when we had big leads.”
Miranda Griffin had two service aces and four assists for the Cougars.
NRW is 2-4; Charlotte is 0-5.
