1960- Little noticed were 900 US military advisers in the relatively unknown country of South Vietnam. Russia's Nikita Khrushchev pounded his fist and canceled the Paris summit conference because of the capture of an American U2 plane. John Kennedy defeated Richard Nixon is a closely fought presidential race.
Popular movies were Psycho, The Apartment, The Sundowners and Sons and Lovers. Ben-Hur was awarded an Oscar. Bobby Darin sang "Mack The Knife," the record of the year.
The first working laser was built. A first class postage stamp cost $0.04.
The Newark High School Class of 1960 held commencement exercises in June. Charles Sergission of the Class of 1922, played Pomp & Circumstance for the 38th consecutive year.
September -2010- Class members are making it back to their hometown to celebrate their 50th reunion this coming weekend. They will gather at the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society on Friday afternoon to relive local history and later a get together and refreshments at the Newark Elks Club.
It's off to the Phelps Hotel for dinner on Saturday evening, and a special dedication on Sunday at their Alma mater, Newark High School. Class members have organized to open a time capsule and dedicate a reading corner in the school library in honor of their 50th anniversary.
PHOTO- A highlight of the 1960 school year was the annual trip to Washington. A handful of classmates met with the late Senator Kenneth B. Keating of New York.
