Writers, Story-tellers, and Story-listeners...
...Join other local story tellers and authors--published and unpublished--at the Pleasant Beach Hotel in Fair Haven, NY to share tales of living on the edge on 3 October 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m.
This year we place special emphasis on Pleasant Beach's centennial year. In 1910 when the Pleasant Beach Hotel first began serving meals and overnight guests, sugar cost 4 cents a pound and the beer can had yet to be invented. Things have changed at the brewery and in the kitchen, but the timeless appeal of this venerable railroad era hotel remains as true and strong as it was a century ago.
Tale tellers may indulge in some time travel and perhaps imagine what folks have seen, heard or done there over the last 100 years by the water here. What did people hear and see on the July night in 1926 when a rum runner's body and bullet riddled boat were towed into Fair Haven bay by the Coast Guard? Who was having dinner on the night in 1918 near the end of World War I when the Conger Coal caught fire at the trestle and burned to the waterline?
Perhaps there will be memorable stories about eating out. A favorite eating out story of one of the story-tellers is once when an odd guest dropped in for dinner. It happened on a college campus when the poor little fellow, a brown bat, fell out of the rafters high overhead in the old South Campus dining hall and took a swan dive into a serving bowl of mashed potatoes.
There will be two hours of tales by local authors and well known town personalities plus an open mike. Then stay for dinner and more stories! It'll be a good time and authors and artists will have books, artwork, and other locally created products for sale. See you there.
