Linda Ochs will again open her house to help others see that sustainable living is something everyone can all learn to do. The open house tour will be this Saturday, October 2, from 10am until 5pm. Her tour is part of the North East Solar Home Association’s yearly open house project that takes place this time every year in the Northeast United States.
“This will be the third year of opening my home for people who are interested in seeing how easy living sustainably can be. I’ve developed my sustainable living over many years on a shoe string budget so people can see you don’t have to be rich to live a more sustainable life and lessen your footprint on our earth. Educating people about being green has been a passion of mine most of my life. I built my house in the 80’s and incorporated extra insulation, lived without power for 7 years before I learned enough about solar electric. I started with 6 solar panels and now have 16, which pretty much takes care of my energy needs as I have a refrigerator manufactured in Denmark, an instantaneous water heater, solar tubes in my kitchen, a composting toilet among other things. I also compost my food waste and have berries and other fruits growing in my yard. My home is always a work in progress and I invite others to learn from my experiences. We all need to get on the right track to saving our air, water and land from further harm and learning some tips on how to work towards that achievement can go a long way towards that goal."

Ochs earned degrees in environmental studies from Finger Lakes Community College and Empire State College, so she has a breadth of knowledge about sustainability and environmental awareness within the Finger Lakes Region. She has done many presentations on the town and county level and also schools.

If you go….

Ochs’ free open house runs from 10 am to 5 pm Saturday. The house is at 2400 Homestead Drive, Waterloo. To contact Ochs, call 315-539-5607 or e-mail her at lsochs@verizon.net.
