WAYNE COUNTY SPORTS WRAP FOR OCT 5 10
LYONS (OCT 5 10) – Clyde-Savannah’s Allyson Fenton and Marcus Whitman’s Zak Ekdahl won their races and led their teams to overall wins in a quad cross-country meet with Lyons and Marion this afternoon in a cold rain.
Fenton (22:37) led three of her teammates to top-10 finishes: Leah Felker (22:52) finished third, Aubrey Baker (24:42) was seventh and Sarah Bastedo (25:12) took 10th.
Marion’s Kaylyn Whitney (24:09), Leah Foley (24:19) and Lindsay Roden (24:40) took the team approach with a 4-5-6 finish. Marcus Whitman’s Rebekah Champlin was second overall (23:31), a minute behind Fenton.
Clyde-Savannah beat Lyons, 16-46, edged Marion 27-28, and took care of Marcus Whitman, 22-37.
Top finishers for the host Lions were Larissa Converse (25:50) in 12th place, and Briana Scott (26:55) in 16th.

In the boys’ event, Ekdahl (17:16) finished a minute ahead of his major competitors, who ran in a knot led by Marcus Whitman teammate Jacob Champlin (18:21) – on his heels were Marion’s Mike VerStraete in a very close third (18:23) and Marcus Whitman’s Garrett Hartman just behind in fourth (18:24) with Clyde’s Joe Ellinger a step back in fifth (18:38).
Lyons, which fielded just two runners, saw Brad Overacre the top finisher, in 11th (19:48). David Manktelow was 32nd (26:48).
In the team standings, Marcus Whitman took Marion, 21-34 and Clyde-Savannah, 17-41.
Newark Volleyball
On Dig Pink night to promote breast cancer awareness, Wayne Central bashed the Lady Reds, 3-1 (25-10, 25-14, 15-25 and 25-23).
“We fought back from a very slow start in game one and two to win game three and push a very talented Wayne team in game four,” said Newark coach Matt May. “Melissa Kline got us back into the match with her serving as she tallied nine aces.”
