The Town of Williamson New York has completed the installation of a package of green infrastructure projects which will offset non-renewable energy with solar power, and conserve both energy and water. Investing over $700,000 in 2009 Federal stimulus funds administered through Environmental Facilities Corporation Green Innovation Grant Program the plant will save taxpayers thousands of dollars each year, reduce the Town's carbon footprint and contribute to the creation of local green collar jobs. The plants energy and water conservation improvements are part of a long term community sustainability plan developed by community leaders.

Town officials have scheduled an Open House and public plant ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, November 15, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the Williamson Wastewater Treatment Plant, 4390 Maken Road in Williamson. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m.

Projects to be unveiled include:
  • A 60 kw solar (photovoltaic) array producing as much as 80,000 of kWh each year resulting in a savings of over $8000.00 per year
  • 1200 square feet of green roof reducing stormwater runoff, demand for heating and cooling and extending the life of the roof membrane.
  • The installation of an belowground storage tank and yard hydrant which will recycle rainwater for non-potable uses such as equipment cleaning and irrigation
Town Supervisor Hoffman noted,
“The Town of Williamson looks forward to operating a net zero energy wastewater treatment plant in the near future. We will continue to identify resources for further green initiatives throughout the Town.”
Larsen Engineers of Rochester, New York prepared the state grant application, the green infrastructure design and coordinated construction.

Important post. When all is said and done, cheap gas is an illusion, because our reliance on gas creates a whole series of costs that aren't factored in to the pump price - among them congestion, pollution, and increased risk of accidents. Thanks
