The men’s basketball team at Alfred University had a four-game win streak stopped by St. John Fisher in the last game before the holiday break, which was also the first game of the Empire-8 conference season for both squads.
Fisher had a 33-22 margin at halftime, and the Cardinal defense clamped down on the Saxon offense, holding Alfred to its lowest point total of the season in the 59-53 loss. For Alfred, sophomore center Bryan Bobo (Wayne) had four points, five rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist.
The Saxons, 5-4 (0-1 E-8), return to action on Jan. 7 against Ithaca.

Shakista Woolfolk (Newark) gabbed six rebounds, made three steals and scored three points on Sunday afternoon as Monroe Community College knocked off Monroe College, 72-60. It was the fifth win in a row for the Tribune Women, who have recovered from a rough season’s start and are now 6-5.
Next up for MCC is a three-game trip to Florida where the Tribs will take on Palm Beach State, Boward College and Miami-Dade Community College. The girls won’t play their next home game until Jan. 29.

The guys at Finger Lakes Community College are 10-1 after beating Jamestown-Olean College and the Medaille College jayvees. Against Jamestown-Olean, sophomore Emanuel Reaves (Sodus) scored 17 points and snared 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Nazareth College sophomore guard Tyshun Stephens (Newark) scored 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and made four assists as the Golden Flyers closed out the semester with a win over Hilbert College on Friday, 69-54. The win bumps Nazareth’s record to 7-2 (0-1 E-8).
The Golden Flyer women also took a win from Hilbert, 68-40, and junior guard Brianne Raes (Marion) contributed three points and compiled twos in everything else – rebounds, steals and assists. The Nazareth women are 4-5.

Javon McCrea (Newark) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for eight points Saturday afternoon as the University of Buffalo closed down Houghton College, 79-47, for the fifth home win this season. Javon also had five rebounds and blocked two shots for the Bulls, who are now 7-3.

The Bulls have an interesting game at home on Dec. 30 when 23rd-ranked Brigham Young aRRIVES. The Cougars just lost their first game of the season on Saturday, 86-79 to UCLA.

Virginia Tech sophomore guard Alyssa Fenyn (Newark) scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds, made two assists and a steal as the Hokies knocked off Radford, 68-54, Tuesday night. Alyssa was on her way home after the game for a short, four-day Christmas visit – she and her teammates host the Hokie/Hilton Garden Inn Holiday Classic starting next Wednesday. Tech faces Alcorn State in the first game, then either Delaware or Vanderbilt.
Soccer
Clarkson University junior soccer midfielder Jim Gacioch (Pal-Mac) played in nine games for the Golden Knights this season, getting off one shot. The Golden Knights had a 6-8-2 season, going 1-6 in the Liberty League.

Medaille College freshman midfielder Breanna Hyman (Newark) started every game for the 3-14-1 Mavericks this fall, getting one assist.
