WAYNE COUNTY (Dec 29 10) – Canisius College senior forward Greg Logins (Sodus/Kent School) scored 17 points and grabbed four rebounds against Northwestern State, but the Golden Griffins couldn’t overcome too many fouls and too few shots falling in, losing, 86-74, in the first meeting between the two schools.
When Greg sank his third field goal with 13:11 left in the first half, he became the 30th player in Canisius history to hit the 1,000-point career scoring mark. That was on Dec. 19.
Last Wednesday, Greg scored three points, grabbed four boards, blocked one shot and grabbed a steal as the Griffs beat Lamar, 78-72, and ended their two-game southern swing. Canisius plays tonight at home against those same Northwestern State Demons.
For the season so far, Greg has scored 98 points, grabbed 57 rebounds (second on the team), made six steals, blocked three shots, and shot .813 from the foul line.

University of Buffalo freshman forward Javon McCrea (Newark) hasn’t started a game yet for the Bulls, but he’s been on the floor in all 10 contests so far, and he’s making an impact when he’s on the hardwood – he leads the team with 73 rebounds (30 offensive, 43 defensive), he’s second in blocked shots (20) and in steals (13), fourth in assists and fifth in scoring average (8.0 points per game).
The Bulls get a real test Thursday when 16th-ranked Brigham Young blows into town.

Virginia Tech hosts the Hilton Garden Hokie Classic, starting tonight, meeting Alcorn State in the second game. Hokie starting sophomore guard Alyssa Fenyn (Newark) is second on the team in scoring (8.9 points per game)) and second in rebounds (4.6 per game). She’s also second in assists (30) and third in steals (17), and Alyssa is shooting .700 from the free-throw line.
Swimming
At the Don Richards Memorial Invitational swim meet at RIT early this month, Tiger freshman Jocelyn Bade (Gananda) was very busy: she was 12th in the 1650 Free (20:18.01), and took laps in two 12th-place relays – the 800 Free Relay (9:14.46) and the 400 Medley Relay (4:37.27). She also placed 19th in the 200 Free (2:11.20) and was 21st in the 500 Free (5:47.52).
Ithaca’s male and female teams won the competition, with RIT’s women sixth. Other schools in the weekend events were Alfred University, Hartwick College and Le Moyne.
Track
Utica College freshman thrower Breiten Balschmiter (Newark) was featured on the college website Tuesday with a release about the track team itching to get back in action after a month-long layoff.
Breiten “burst on the scene” with a first-place finish in the Shot Put (14.49 meters) at meet at Saint Lawrence University. That throw qualifies him for the post-season ECAC meet.
He’ll be back in the area on Jan. 15 when the Pioneers visit the RIT Invitational on Jan. 15.

The goal of College Wrap is to follow as many Wayne County collegiate athletes as we know about, and at this point, we know about 63 athletes at 20 colleges and universities. As you can already see, we mention them and their efforts whether they finish first or 51st – it is their effort and commitment that are important. We will also be on the lookout for academic and sportsmanship honors.
If you think we’ve missed someone – or want to make sure we don’t miss someone – please send me a note at john.addyman@yahoo.com. Please let me know what your relationship to the athlete is – I respond to all e-mail and I like to know whom I’m writing to.
