When was the last time you heard of a game called off on account of nice weather! Curling on the Canal, Palmyra’s eagerly anticipated winter sporting spectacle, is the latest victim of last week’s spring like temperatures. The event, slated for Saturday, February 26, 2011 at the Port of Palmyra Marina in Palmyra, New York, cannot take place this year because there is too little ice and the coming week’s forecasted weather conditions do not seem likely to produce conditions necessary to ensure a safe playing surface.
Curling on the Canal organizers Bill and Irene Unterborn are sad to have to pull the plug on the event for 2011, but will try to bring the excitement of their favorite game back outdoors in 2012.
“We’re inspired by a similar event in Scotland called „The Grand Match‟ that can involve over 2,400 curlers on a frozen loch,” explain the Unterborns. “The Scots plan the match each year, but it has only actually been held about 34 times in the last 150 years. They are at the mercy of the weather, as are we. We’re now four for eight, so we guess we’re doing better than they are!”
