Wayne County Council for the Arts is pleased to present “Month of Quilts” from May 7th through the 28th. The purpose of our exhibit is to share with, and educate our community on the wide range of fiber art talent in Wayne County as well as provide an opportunity to display the work of area contemporary quilt artists.
Quilting is a sewing method done to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. Quilting can be done by hand, by sewing machine, or by a specialist longarm quilting system. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. Quilting is done to create bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out.
If you are interested in participating and displaying your fiber art in our quilt exhibit, additional information can be found on our website or by calling Wayne Arts at 315-331-4593. Final selections are at the discretion of three members of the board of directors of Wayne County Council for the Arts. Our goal is to display a variety of contemporary quilts, from traditional to original or unique made by Wayne County artists/quilters. Selection criteria will be based on how the quilt fits into the overall exhibit as well as the technique used, the visual impact and quality of work and design.
We are pleased to have Marcia DeCamp, a renowned contempary quilt artist, join us for one of our “trunk shows” on May 7th at 2:00 pm. Marcia made a transforming choice in 2000 when she purchased a sewing machine and took her first quilting classes. This former Professor of Business Technology at Finger Lakes Community College had established a successful computer consulting company but wanted to explore a different type of creative challenge. As she looked towards retiring, the quilts that her mother had long ago made for her own hope chest kindled an interest in quilt making. Abstract designs and strong geometric patterns dominate Marcia's current work. She feels a strong connection to the Southwest, and her color palette often reflects this influence. She dyes most of her own fabrics, composes her work with many references to landscapes and the natural world, and completes her pieced works with machine quilting.
We will also be offering a class to make a Patriotic Banner. Celebrate all American holidays with a patriotic red, white and blue quilt banner. Beginner’s and advanced quilters are welcome. The class consists of easy strip piecing and fusible appliqué’ technique. Finished quilt top measures 10”x30.”
Come, have fun and leave with a completed quilt banner. Display your American pride all year. The class will be held on Saturday, May 14th from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm and instructed by Theresa Volpe. For additional information and to register call 315-331-7323 and also check out our website at www.wayne-arts.com
