Opening day has arrived for Meg's Canal St. Cafe! This small but quaint location on Canal Street in the Village of Lyons, has offered many beginning entrepreneurs the opportunity to become part of the community. Meghan Burgess, owner of the cafe, is nothing short of being ambitious. This 18 year old local resident decided that with her culinary arts experience, she was ready to offer the community something different.
The interior of the cafe had been cleaned up with some added "family" flair. This restaurant speaks family as Ms. Burgess' family also assists her with running the restaurant. Her father, Ron Burgess, is a successful local contractor, while her mother, Tracy, has many years of waitress experience and her brother, Brandon, also has experience in cooking. This is the only ALL family owned and operated business in Lyons.
Opening day can be very emotional and nerve wracking. Burgess commented "It was a little stressful this morning because the coffee pot wouldn't work right, but other than that, it's been awesome." Several local citizens dropped by this morning for breakfast and to wish her luck.
The cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. for breakfast and lunch is offered from 11 a.m. to 2 pm. each day. Currently there is a limited menu until next week's local festival, Peppermint Days. Until then, they are working up Root Beer and Orange Floats and a Strawberry Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast with fresh, seasonal berries as the breakfast special. It is cash only but plans of adding a debit/credit machine may be in the near future. Other future plans include theme nights including Italian cuisine and soul food to appeal to the local residents.
There will be a small welcoming celebration today at 2:00 p.m. at the Cafe. Please stop down and meet Meghan and her family and welcome them to the neighborhood.
