Students interested in competing in the New York State FFA Welding Contest at Empire Farm Days are encouraged to pre-register by Monday, July 25, 2011. Students may also register on-site at 9 am on contest day Thursday, August 11, 2011. All students are welcome to compete as teams of two or individually for certificates. Active FFA students will compete for $2,250 in scholarship funds from Morrisville State College.
Those interested in participating in the welding contest should contact contest coordinators Jim Taylor, taylorjd@morrisville.edu, 315-527-8262, or Johanna Fox-Bossard, jbossard@hamiltoncentral.org, 315-440-1044, for a list of equipment to bring.
The top three individual students receive Morrisville State College scholarships: 1st Place: $1,000 scholarship; 2nd Place: $750 Scholarship; and 3rd Place: $500 Scholarship. Awards are also presented for High Team performance.
Each student must perform three welds with two different types of tools provided by Haun Welding. Contestants also complete a metal identification quiz and a multiple choice quiz. The students are also judged on professional appearance, attitude, preparedness and safety. The contest will be held next to the Field Demonstrations area starting at 10 am.
Contest sponsors include Haun Welding, Briggs and Stratton Yard Power Products Group in Munnsville manufacturing Ferris Products, Clinton Tractor & Implement, and the Calidonna Family.
The FFA/4-H Tractor Safety Contest at Empire Farms Days will be held Thursday, August 11th with registration 9-9:15am.
The 300-acre Empire Farm Days agricultural extravaganza includes DairyProfit Seminars, live animals, an Equine Center, farm safety and family life displays and activities, 600-plus representatives of agricultural institutions and organizations, tractor, ATV and Heavy Duty RAM Truck test drives, and NY-raised chicken, beef and pork BBQ.
