Local Girl Participating on National Girls' Baseball Team at the Cooperstown Field of Dream Tournmanent
Baseball For All (BFA) has chosen Sarah Eleanor Bruno of Webster, New York as a member of the Sparks, an elite, all-girls 12U baseball team that will compete at Cooperstown Dreams Park in Cooperstown, New York on August 12-19. The team will be managed by Robin Wallace, a 2004 member of the USA Baseball National Women’s Baseball Team that captured a gold medal at the Women’s Baseball World Cup.
Bruno played for the Siena Catholic Academy Modified Team, Brighton, NY, Webster Athletic Association 12 U Little League Team and Webster Athletic Association 50/70 Development Team, Webster, NY this spring and summer. The 12 U Webster Team recently captured the division and league championship. Her position is a starting pitcher with a ERA of 1 and batting average of over 600. Sarah’s play with the Siena Catholic Academy Jr. High Modified team was as one of the starting pitchers and second base position. Her ERA was .05 with a batting average of over 500. She will be an eighth grade student at Siena Catholic Academy, Brighton, New York this fall. During the past academic year she was a high honor student at Siena Catholic Academy, Girl Scout and member of St. Rita Church Youth Group.
Sarah Bruno is the daughter of Terry and James Bruno, Webster, New York and the granddaughter of Zaida Bruno and the late Douglas Bruno formally of Williamson and Sodus, New York and the adopted granddaughter of Gerald Slater, Sodus, New York.
In 2003, the Sparks became the first all-girls baseball team to ever compete in what was traditionally considered a “boys” event. The team was the brainchild of BFA founder and executive director Justine Siegal, a former college and professional baseball coach. This past spring, she became the first female to throw batting practice in several major league baseball spring training camps.
Throughout their eight year history, the Sparks have drawn top 12U female baseball players from the United States, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Hong Kong and Indonesia!
Last season, the Sparks finished 39th out of 104 teams during their tourney week. The 2011 season will mark the ninth season that the Sparks have competed at Dreams Park. Three members of the Sparks have gone on to play for USA Baseball’s National Women’s Team.
BFA is a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization, dedicated to providing meaningful instruction and opportunities in baseball, especially for girls.
