The Newark Pilots won the 2011 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) Championship Series over the Amsterdam Mohawks with a sweep of their Thursday night double header at Shuttleworth Park.
After dropping Game 1 to the Mohawks 5-2 at Colburn Park, the Pilots took the final two games of the series 4-3 and 7-4 respectively to win the inaugural PGCBL crown in their first-ever season as team.

The losses are the Mohawks first two postseason losses since 2008. As part of the New York Collegiate Baseball League, Amsterdam won the 2009 and 2010 championship series and was on a 14-game playoff win streak.

Newark 4, Amsterdam 3 (11 innings)

In the top of the 11th inning with the game tied 3-3, Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher) hit the game-winning homerun over the wall in left field. Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) closed the bottom half of the inning to preserve the win and tie the Championship Series at a game apiece.

Dominick Ruscitti (Kutztown) earned the win after pitching three scoreless innings in the eighth, ninth and 10th. Ruscitti struck out two while improving to 2-0 in the postseason.

The Mohawks took an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first on an RBI double from Luke Maile (Kentucky).

A two-run single from Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) in the second gave Newark a one-run lead. Randy Villa (San Joaquin Delta) put the Pilots up 3-1 with a towering homerun to left field in the sixth.
Brad Picha (Paris J.C.) evened the score in the seventh. After Maile reached on an error, Picha hit a two-run homer. Derrick Brewer (Radford) earned the loss after surrendering the homerun to Osterman in the 11th inning.

Carson Beauchaine (Saginaw Valley State) started on the mound for Newark. He fanned a game-high nine batters through seven innings. Villa finished 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI.
Picha led Amsterdam with three hits and two RBI’s. Brett Houseal (Marist) gave up three runs with seven strikeouts in his six innings of work.

Newark 7, Amsterdam 4

The Pilots never trailed in Game 3 as they again defeated the Mohawks. Three errors in the first from by Amsterdam gave Newark a 2-0 lead. Swenson led off the contest by reaching on the first error. Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge) also reached base safely on an error, which allowed Swenson to score the first run of the game.

Josh Alexander (Utah) hit a double in the top of the fifth with the Mohawks trailing 3-1. After advancing to third on a base hit, a RBI fielder’s choice allowed Alexander to reduce the deficit to just one run.
Newark scored twice in the sixth. Jacob Starnes (UT Dallas) drove in Villa with a single and later scored on a double from Greg Schworm (Finger Lakes C.C.).

Andrew Tidwell (Saginaw Valley State) pitched six strong innings for the Pilots. He struck out three while allowing just two earned runs.

Reliever Jim Glasgow (Lewis) entered the game with runners on first and second and no outs in the sixth. Glasgow overthrew first on a sacrifice bunt attempt from Brewer, allowing two more Amsterdam runs would score.

With a 5-4 lead, Justin D’Amato (St. John Fisher) took the mound for Newark. He threw three perfect innings while earning a save. Usually a starter, D’Amato struck out six of the nine Mohawks he faced.
Schworm, who was the designated hitter in the nightcap after catching in Game 2, hit a two-run single in the eighth to give the Pilots a comfortable three-run lead. He finished 3-for-4 with one run and three RBI’s.

Jack Fischer (Wake Forest) earned the loss in Game 3. He pitched five and one-third innings, surrendering five runs and striking out four. Fischer was also 1-for 3 with one run and one RBI as the Mohawks played without a designated hitter. Alexander scored three runs on three hits.

    Great news. Newark should hold a celebration for the team. Thanks to Bob Ohmann, Newark Village officials, Mayor Blandino, Supervisor Colacino for making this possible.
