Tugboat Urger makes first visit to Palmyra for Pirate Weekend
New York State Canal Corporation’s flagship vessel, Tugboat Urger, will dock at the Port of Palmyra Marina for the first time ever on Saturday, August 6, 2011 during Palmyra Pirate Weekend.
Tugboat Urger cruises to numerous cities, towns and villages along the Canal System where she and her four-member crew serve as ambassadors for New York's Canals at community festivals celebrating their Canal heritage.
In 1991, Urger accepted a new challenge and became a floating classroom, providing educational programming for school children and adults, teaching the importance of New York's historic Canal System and the role that inland waterways have played, and continue to play, in the lives of people who live along them.
About Palmyra Pirate Weekend
Palmyra Pirate Weekend is a family-friendly, experiential festival intended to showcase Palmyra, New York, the Queen of Canal Towns. The visit of the Lois McClure to the Port of Palmyra Marina in August, 2007 was the first wind in the sails for Palmyra Pirate Weekend, yet this grassroots event has grown by the hard work of some creative and talented people who have long recognized Palmyra as the perfect place to live, work, and play. And we’re pretty sure we’re the only Pirate Festival on the Erie Canal!

Palmyra Village Mayor Vicky Daly says she is “absolutely delighted that the Urger will be part of our Pirate Weekend.” She added, ”Everyone should take advantage of the chance to tour it this wonderful tugboat. We are indebted to the NYS Canal Corporation folks who made it happen"Not only will Urger be celebrating her first-ever visit to Palmyra, she is also celebrating 110 years of service. Built in 1901 in Michigan, Urger entered the New York State Canal Fleet in 1921, and spent more than 60 years hauling machinery, dregs, and scows on the Champlain and Erie Canals.
