The Wayne County GrandSlam & Merchants Challenge Youth Derby held its 14th Annual Awards Ceremony at the Sodus Point Firehall, Saturday, August 27th and the celebration not only marked the longevity of the event…but the fact that a record 100 youngsters signed-up for the 2011 contest. Kids and parents filled the fire hall for fun, food, raffles and special entertainment by Walt Crum of Balloon Art. Walt thrilled the youngsters with his balloon creations.

2011 GrandSlam Kids

The unique derby, promoted by the Wayne County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the Wayne County Office of Tourism, begins the second week in May, and continues until mid August.

There are two age groups; youth 4 -7 years of age and 8 -16 years of age, and the winners received saving bonds, fishing packets, and gift certificates.

Within the two age groups there are three separate divisions in the fishing derby. The GrandSlam Division is the cold water fish contest. Catch all five species of trout and salmon in Lake Ontario (Coho, Chinook, brown and lake trout, and rainbow) and you qualify for the Grand Prize. Once you catch all five, you can add to your score with a heavier catch.

The Challenge Division has the same criteria, although the five fish to qualify are warm water species; pike, perch, walleye, small and largemouth bass. Species is the third division. The largest fish in any division is a winner.

Sixty – nine youngsters weighed fish during the 2011 contest, and we had two Grand Prize winners. Hunter Dennis won the Grandslam by catching all 5 species with a total weight of 41 pounds. Nicolette Prutzman won the Merchants Challenge division by catching all 5 species with a total weight of 9.09 pounds.
