On 15 October 2011 a day-long writing workshop will take place in Fair Haven,“Stone Stories: A Great Lakes Writing Workshop”. This day of exploration and creation is being hosted by the Bayview Wellness Center and led by author / naturalist Susan Peterson Gateley.
The workshop meets in the morning at the Hardware Café in Fair Haven for coffee before heading to the beach. Gateley explains that inspiration for Stone Stories comes from Anne Dillard’s essays on spirituality and exploration as collected in her book, <Teaching A Stone to Talk. After beach combing she says “We'll have lunch back at the Hardware Cafe and then go to the Wellness Center and Spa to write share and discuss our stone stories. The intent is to develop a personal essay or poem with potential for publication.”
Susan Peterson Gateley, a former teacher and science writer, has published a half dozen nonfiction books on Lake Ontario. She began writing for magazines thirty years ago and has sold hundreds of articles. She also organizes writing and publishing workshops and operates a seasonal business, Silver Waters Sailing offering charters and instruction. Karen Haas opened the Bayview Wellness Center this past spring in Fair Haven. She has a long association with Fair Haven having grown up in Cato. She spent summers as a youngster at a cottage on the bay. She offers massage therapy, classes in yoga, fitness, and works with other instructors in a variety of fields. Haas is also a Reiki Level Two practitioner.
The workshop cost is $25 and participants get a copy of Peterson Gateley's The Edge Walker’s Guide to Lake Ontario Beach Combing to help them with further “independent study." An optional add-on, a Hot Stone Massage at Bayview Wellness Center, at a discounted price, is also available.
