What is NaNoWriMo? National Novel Writing Month!
On October 22 at 1:00 PM, Village Bookmarket, 207 East Main St., Palmyra, NY, will hold and informational meeting and discussion about NaNoWriMo. Local author Brooks Tenney, who has participated in NaNoWriMo in the past, will be on hand to discuss NaNoWriMo and writing in general.
National Novel Writing Month, a nonprofit literary program that challenges aspiring novelists to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days, has taken over coffee shops, classrooms, and libraries across the world since its beginning in 1999. Now it’s coming to your neighborhood bookstore.
Throughout November, Village Bookmarket, 207 East Main St., Palmyra, NY, will join other bookstores around the world, inviting and encouraging NaNoWriMo participants to Come Write In! at their stores. For a few frantic and magical hours, these stores will play host to the fast, furious, and fantastic process of novel writing.
Come Write In! aims to bring together independent bookstores—which have been traditional gathering places for readers and writers—and NaNoWriMo novelists, with the goal of celebrating writing, fostering literary communities, and encouraging book lovers to make the leap and write a novel of their own.
NaNoWriMo is the largest writing contest in the world, with participants in nearly 450 cities and towns around the globe. In 2009, over 160,000 people took part in the free challenge. And while the event emphasizes fun and creative exploration over publication, more than 30 NaNoWriMo novelists have had their NaNo-novels published, including Sarah Gruen, whose New York Times #1 Best Seller, Water for Elephants began as a NaNoWriMo novel.
