Oh, the paper products that come to our houses whether we want them or not! Phone directories left by our mailboxes or on our porches! Catalogs clogging our mailboxes! There are solutions for the problem of unwanted printed products.

Reducing waste is always the first choice for solid waste management whether a home or a business. One waste material that comes into our homes totally without our request is phone books and yellow pages directories. While the directories are recycled in all local collection programs, just having those directories delivered unwanted and unrequested on our doorsteps is annoying.

The yellow pages industry has now provided a way to opt-out of receiving the books. It does require internet access to register. Go to http://www.yellowpagesoptout.com. The on-line form requests name and address, a working phone number, and an e-mail address. A message is sent to your e-mail. By clicking on the link provided, you are able to choose which directories you wish to receive in your home.

Catalogs also come to our mailboxes without our direct request. Catalog Choice (https://www.catalogchoice.org) has on-line tools to help reduce the number of catalogs that are mailed to you.

If you have other questions on recycling and reducing waste, please call or write the Western Finger Lakes Solid Waste Management Authority, 315.946.7650 or visit www.wfingerlakesauthority.org. Find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (WFLArecycle).
