Our Big Read 2012
“The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier is this year’s choice for Our Big Read. “The Chocolate War” is the story of a ninth grader who is bullied because he won’t sell chocolate candy in the school’s fundraiser. The theme of bullying is a very timely one considering the terrible and tragic events we have read recently in the newspaper. Many interesting activities have been planned for the month of March in connection with this book.
Historic Palmyra’s Program on February 16 at 6:30 p.m. will center on elder abuse. This program will be based on the book with real situations in the past and present that relate to it. As always, Historic Palmyra brings relevance to our lives today while searching out the past. This program will be held at the Alling Coverlet Museum, 122 William Street, Palmyra. Call for information (315) 597-6981.
Palmyra Community Library is sponsoring a review of the book on March 12 at noon which will be given by Mayor Vicky Daly. This also includes a luncheon ($5.00) so reservations are required. Please call 315-597-5276 to make reservations.
Walworth-Seely Public Library will hold a Book Review by Joseph Siracuse, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Wayne Central School, on Tuesday, March 6, 2011, 6:30-8:00 PM. Call 315-986-1511, check the blog, walworthseely.blogspot.com, or email walworthlibrary@pls-net.org for more information.
Books, ETC. of Macedon will have two Sundays in March where the book will be the focus point. On March 4 at 4:00 PM, we will discuss the book with all of its themes. On March 18 at 4:00 PM, there will be a discussion on bullying.
The closing of this year’s event will be a healing service at the Palmyra United Methodist Church. This will be held at 3:00 PM on March 25. All people who have been bullied or have bullied are invited to either help strengthen their lives or seek forgiveness and harmony. We all need healing. There will be a reception to follow the service.
