Geneva Theatre Guild (GTG) has planned an exciting line-up of community theater productions for 2012, beginning with the popular Playwrights / Playreadings. This annual event begins with the solicitation of short, original plays. The selected plays will then be presented as staged playreadings on April 20 at 7:00 PM at the Geneva Public Library, and on April 21 and 22 at 2:00 PM at Torrey Park Grill.
For the summer musical, GTG brings the Broadway sensation Avenue Q to the historic Smith Opera House. This popular musical about real life in New York City is told by a cast of people and puppets through a hilariously irreverent, Tony-winning book and score. Avenue Q will be directed by Steve Duprey and preformed on July 19-21 at 8:00 PM, and July 22 at 2:00 PM.
Geneva Theatre Guild Youth Theatre will present Les Misérables School Edition. This version of the legendary Broadway musical which recounts the struggles of life in 19th Century France has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young performers. Director Jennifer Sherron Stock from New York City will helm this production. Ms. Stock has twenty years experience in professional theater and is a member of SDC (the professional Stage Directors and Choreographers union). Les Mis will mark Ms. Stock’s return to the Geneva Theatre Guild for the first time since 1980. She will be assisted by Denise Parks and Kathy Mater. Les Misérables School Edition will be performed at the Geneva High School Auditorium on July 27 and 28 at 7:00 PM, and July 29 at 2:00 PM.
In its traditional fall slot, the Geneva Theatre Guild will present the classic Neil Simon comedy The Odd Couple. Worlds collide with hilarious results when slobbish Oscar Madison agrees to room with his recently divorced neat-freak pal Felix Unger. Directed by Terri Knight-Miller, The Odd Couple will be performed in the Pat Collins Black Box Theater at the Geneva Community Center on November 2, 3, 9, 10 at 7:30 PM, and November 4 and11 at 2:00 PM.
