SUBMITTED by Theresa Streb (3-Feb-2012)
On Mon., Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. the Lyons Public Library's Historical Book Club will meet to discuss
"The Redemption of the Harper's Ferry Cowards" by R. L. Murray in the Community Room.
Based on many numerous primary sources, the book tells the history of the 111th and 126th New York State Regiments which suffered some of the highest casualties of any of the Union regiments at Gettysburg. Formed in 1862, they were sent to Harpers Ferry for training. Soon after arriving they faced "Stonewall" Jackson's troops but they were such green troops, the regiments were blamed for the inept defense of the garrison. They redeemed themselves at the Battle of Gettysburg in one of the most vicious battles of the Civil War.
Refreshments will be served. For more information, call the Lyons Public Library at (315) 946-9262 or email lyonslibrary@owwl.org.
