SUBMITTED by Theresa Streb (9-Mar-2012)
The Lyons Public Library's book club, History's Footnotes, will meet on Mon., Mar. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Local History Room to discuss "Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society girls in the West" by Dorothy Wickenden.
The book tells the story of two young women, Rosamund and Dorothy from Auburn, NY, used to the finer things in life but not ready to settle down. So during the 1916-17 school year, the two pals head out west to Elkhead, Colorado to be become the first teachers in a new schoolhouse. A wonderful journey, all the more interesting because it is true, related by Wickenden, who is the granddaughter of Dorothy.
For more information, please call the Lyons Public Library at (315) 946-9262 or email lyonslibrary@owwl.org.
