SUBMITTED by Donna Johnson (16-Mar-2012)
Monday, March 12 marked the first meeting of a newly formed Veterans Services Advisory Committee. The meeting was initiated by Wayne County Action Program, Inc. (WCAP), as a component of the agency’s InVEST initiative. InVEST (Investing in Veterans through Education, Support and Training) is examining ways WCAP is currently providing services for Wayne County Veterans, and how these services can be enhanced. Key to this goal is non-duplication of services.

The meeting was well attended by many other agencies also with a goal to expand and enhance services for Veterans: American Legion; VFW; Wayne County Veteran Services Agency; Wayne Behavioral Health Network; Legal Assistance of Western NY; Finger Lakes Addictions Counseling and Referral Agency; Trail Works, Inc. and the Wayne County Board of Supervisors.
Key issues identified by the group include: lack of medical services for Veterans within Wayne County; limited transportation options for Veterans to access medical and other services outside of Wayne County and; the lack of comprehensive promotion of services within and across Veteran serving agencies.
The Veterans Services Advisory Committee is open to any individual or agency that would like to help address the growing need of provision of services for our Wayne County Veterans. Please contact Drew Shumway for a copy of the minutes from the meeting, to be included in the email distribution list, or to attend the next meeting on Monday, June 11, 10AM at the Lyons Community Center on Manhattan Street, Lyons. Drew can be reached at: (315) 879-7725 or via email at invest.vista@waynecap.org.
