The Wayne County Historical Society will open the first exhibit of the year, “Wayne County Call of Duty: The War of 1812” in March. The exhibit on the war of 1812, also called “the forgotten war”, will focus on the two battles fought in 1813 in Wayne County at Pultneyville and Sodus Point.
Congress passed an act declaring war to exist between the United States and Great Britain on the 17th of June 1812. On the 19th President Madison issued a Proclamation formally declaring war against Great Britain. The exposed counties on the Great Lakes were vulnerable. In Wayne County, the small villages of Sodus Point and Pultneyville with few or no troops and no fortifications were about to get a taste of war.
Join the historical society in the Museum of Wayne County History for the preview party, March 8 at 7pm, where the first part of the PBS special, “The War of 1812” will be shown.This event is free and open to the public.
