The story is a familiar one, often repeated at the Newark Chamber of Commerce building at T. Spencer Knight Park. "Where does the trail go from here?' is asked by bicyclists and walkers, who are disappointed when told they have to take Rt. 31 to continue east.

State, County and local officials took action last week when a ground breaking ceremony was held at Lock 28B in Newark. The occasion was the first step in finishing the trail from Newark to the eastern edge of the Town of Lyons.

Attending the May 2 ceremony was Brian L. Stratton, Director of the NYS Canal Corp., Lyons Supervisor Brian Manktelow, Newark Mayor Peter Blandino, and Arcadia Supervisor Dick Colacino, who spearheaded the project and planned the ceremony.

The completed trail will be 4.8 miles long and is the result of a $882,451 federal grant, matched by $220,612 locally as well as in kind services. The Arcadia Highway Department will be the major contractor of the extended trail.
