Senator Nozzolio Applauds Governor Cuomo for Seeking Disaster Aid for Farmers Impacted by Sudden Weather Changes
New York State is seeking federal disaster assistance for farmers whose crops have been severely damaged by recent unseasonable temperature extremes, State Senator Mike Nozzolio has announced.
Commissioner Aubertine, on behalf of the Governor, has responded that the State is seeking federal Disaster Declarations for nearly 40 counties in New York, including Wayne, Seneca, Cayuga, Ontario, Monroe, Tompkins and Yates. Commissioner Aubertine also affirmed the State Department of Agriculture’s commitment to actively monitor the situation and work to ensure every area that was impacted receives the appropriate federal response. The full extent of the damage has not yet been determined and may not be known until after harvesting.

New York State is seeking federal disaster assistance for farmers whose crops have been severely damaged by recent unseasonable temperature extremes, State Senator Mike Nozzolio has announced.
“This is greatly encouraging news for fruit growers in the Wayne-Finger Lakes Region, whose livelihoods have been jeopardized by this sudden temperature shift,” said Senator Nozzolio. “I applaud Governor Cuomo and New York State Commissioner of Agriculture Darrel Aubertine for their quick response to the destruction caused by this severe weather.”The unexpected early thaw in March and April followed by sudden freezing temperatures has caused major damage to the fruit crops in Wayne County and the Finger Lakes Region. Earlier this spring, Senator Nozzolio and more than 20 of his Senate colleagues from across Upstate New York wrote to Governor Cuomo, urging him to petition the Federal government to declare the impacted region a disaster area.

“Federal assistance in the wake of this damage is critical to ensuring the viability of our Finger Lakes agriculture,” said Senator Nozzolio. “Governor Cuomo and Commissioner Aubertine’s efforts to bring immediate federal attention to this serious issue are greatly appreciated and I will continue working closely with them to get the federal response our farmers and fruit growers need.”
