The Cooperstown Hawkeyes (11-25) rally in the ninth and score six runs to defeat the Newark Pilots (20-17) 10-8 in front of a crowd of 1,975 strong at Colburn Park Wednesday night.
Cooperstown rallied in the top of the ninth. After loading the bases, Colton Beatty (Cal State Stanislaus) singled to drive in Ty Morris (Cal State Monterey Bay) for the run. Two more runs crossed the plate for the visitors on a fielding error committed by the shortstop. Jacob Hubert (Laredo CC) double in one run.
Another fielding error by Newark’s shortstop allowed one last run to come home. All in all, Cooperstown scored six runs to take a 10-8 lead in the ballgame.
Newark had the game’s first few runs as they tallied three runs in the bottom of fourth. With men on first and third, Joe Landi (Univ. of Rhode Island) scored home on a delayed steal as Ben Bostick (St. John Fisher College) stole second. Bostick later scored on a Chris Doyle (UC Davis) tripled towards right field. Brent Langston (Delta State) finished off the inning with fly out to left field, allowing Bostick to score for the team’s third run.
Cooperstown added one run in the top of the fifth. The starting catcher Kyle Liner (Binghamton) singled in Bradley Vanderglass (Northern Kentucky) for the RBI hit.
The Pilots added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With men on second and third, Landi provided the team with a RBI single that scored Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher College). The trailing runner was thrown out at the plate on a very close play.
The Hawkeyes made reliever Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) struggle in the top of the seventh. Thea was able to load the bases with two outs in the inning, allowing Chris Blanton (Cal State
Monterey Bay) to unload them with one swing of the bat. His double to right center allowed Cooperstown to tie the score 4-4.
Newark regained the lead, as they put up four runs to take a 8-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Doyle added two RBIs to his stat line with single. Cash Barker doubled down the right field line to add another run. Bostick capped of the inning with a RBI triple to left center.
Reliever Josh Anderson (Cypress) won his first regular season game for the visitors. The righty pitched four innings of relief, giving up four runs, one earned on seven hits. He struck out two and walked just one. Mark Scott (San Joaquin Delta) came on in the ninth and earned his second loss of the season. The righty pitched one inning giving up six runs, one earned on three hits. He struck out three and walked three.
The Pilots will be on the road as they travel to Elmira to take on the Pioneers at Dunn Field for a game time start of 7:05 on Thursday night. The Hawkeyes will be visitors as they travel to Oneonta to take on the Outlaws at Damaschke Field for a game time start of 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
