First things first: I don’t care what you read in the newspaper: the Comfort Station, i.e. restroom and shower complex, at the Port of Palmyra Marina does not have air conditioned showers. We wanted to make it a nice, comfortable, welcoming facility, but really! Where did that come from? I have no idea.
In the category of PSA (Public Service Announcement) and at the request of members of the Village government and staff, I pass along the following, both of which are simply matters of common sense and neighborliness. First, there is no such thing in NYS law as a legal ‘rolling stop’. The two words contradict each other. Back in the olden times, when we all drove standard shift, it was clearer. You had to shift to stop and then shift to return to drive – and use the clutch to do so. Seriously, not coming to a complete stop at a stop sign can lead to tragedy. You don’t want to be responsible for that.
As with demonstrating good manners on the road, give some thought to which the wind is blowing when you have a fire in your backyard. It may be perfectly legal and meet all code requirements, but a steady stream of smoke wafting onto someone’s porch or into a yard from a neighbor’s fire doesn’t make for a pleasant experience.
A week or so ago, we ran into a couple from Long Island at the marina. They had spent the week on a Mid-lakes Navigation hire boat www.midlakesnav.com and were getting ready to return it the next morning but were looking for dinner so we invited them to join us at Muddy Waters for dinner and music. During the course of the evening we learned that Karen is a travel writer who was documenting their week on the Erie Canal. If you would like to see what she had to say about our Queen of Canal Towns, go to http://www.examiner.com/article/erie-canal-journey-by-boat-and-bike-palmyra-queen-of-canal-towns . You will be pleased.
Something else that will please you, despite the temporary inconvenience it may cause, is the completion of the Hyde Parkway road work. We know it has been a long time coming, for a variety of reasons, but now it is time.
A reminder: If you want to be part of Pirates Weekend, August 10 – 11, www.eriecanalpirates.com and CanalTown Days, September 15 – 16, www.palmyracanaltowndays.org it’s time. Note: If you have eyeglasses to dispose of, hang on to them until CanalTown Days. The Pal-Mac Lions Club will take them off your hands that weekend and give you a free bag of popcorn as a thank you. That’s a win-win for everyone.
