It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as the Lyons Main Street Program firms up plans for Peppermint Winter Wonderland. This year, the Lyons Main Street Program has partnered with Lyons National Bank (LNB), Dobbins Drugs, the Ohmann Theatre and the Lyons Chamber of Commerce in celebration of the national Small Business Saturday promotion on Saturday, November 24th to brighten up downtown Lyons for the holidays.
Downtown businesses will be open late for shopping, offer light snacks to their shoppers and Lyons will once again trip the lights fantastic when the fourth edition of Peppermint Winter Wonderland’s “Light Up Lyons Holiday Lights Parade” makes its way through downtown. The parade began four years ago as a LMSP holiday promotion to draw visitors and shoppers to downtown businesses and last year it joined forces with the “Light Up the Park” volunteers to grow both events.
To help set the stage for festive holiday activities, the Lyons Main Street Program and Lyons Chamber of Commerce are urging downtown businesses and residents along the parade route to deck the halls with lots of lights and decorations.
The Holiday Lights Parade, which steps-off at 6 pm, will line up at the Town of Lyons office parking lot at Jackson and Phelps/14 beginning at 5: 30 pm. There are no registrations and entrants need only to arrive at 5:30 pm to be placed in the line-up. Entrants are encouraged to cover anything that moves with lights (which makes the possibilities unlimited!) and join the fun.
Dashboard converters are available for less than $25 and will power portable sound systems or multiple strings of LED lights while increased power converters will power LED lights and inflatable holiday decorations.
The parade route will be south on William Street from Broad Street to Pearl Street; West on Pearl Street to Broad Street; north on Broad Street to Church Street to disperse. While the crowd awaits Santa’s arrival, background holiday music will set the tone and there will be a vendor on hand selling treats and warm beverages.
After Santa’s arrival at the Wayne County Courthouse, Santa will lead the audience in the countdown to the lighting of the park, including lighted decorations on the newly restored bandstand. The Lyons High School Jazz Ensemble and the Lyons Varsity Cheerleaders will perform before Santa leads the crowds to Fox’s at the Ohmann Theatre where he will sit for photographs (bring your own camera!).
Other Ohmann Theatre events for the month of December include a celebration of the theatre’s 98th birthday with a digitally remastered presentation of Gone With the Wind at 7:30 pm on Dec. 6 and 7, and at 3 pm and 7:30 pm on Dec. 8 and 9. On Friday, December 21st, LNB will partner with the theatre again and present free showings of Arthur Christmas at 1 pm and a very special presentation of White Christmas at 7:30.

As a lead up to the parade and lighting ceremonies, LNB and the Ohmann Theatre are sponsoring a free kiddy movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks at 1 pm. The Newark Pilots mascot, Ace, will be on-hand to greet the kids.

Made in 1954, White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen, is second only to A Christmas Story as a favorite holiday classic and was filmed for the big screen in VistaVision and Technicolor. Only the big screen can provide the venue in which the movie was meant to be shown with all of the big song and dance numbers, colorful costuming, not to mention the big payoff at the end of the movie when the barn doors open to reveal a scene direct from a Currier and Ives print while the cast sings the title song. The free showings on December 21st are presented in conjunction with the Lyons Main Street Program’s “Festive Friday – A Last Minute Shopping Blast” a promotion aimed at last minute shoppers seeking something other than a “big box store” gift. Downtown retail businesses will be open late and offer samples and light snacks to keep shoppers spirits up.
