23 Teams Going for Gold in Lyons!

Huge crowds are expected in Lyons when the Lyons Junior Senior High School hosts several Wayne Finger Lakes Track and Field events during the months of April and May, 2013.  On April 20, Lyons will host a Wayne Finger Lakes Invitational Track and Field event. There will be a maximum of 42 entries for each open event.  On April 26, Lyons will host its own Lyons Invitational with a maximum of 32 entries for each open event.

On May 17, Lyons will host the Wayne Finger Lakes Track and Field Championships. The meet will begin at 4:30PM. The championship competition will feature several hundred of the best Wayne Finger Lakes male and female track and field athletes from 23 area schools. There will be a maximum of 32 entries for each open event.  Each school is allowed one team for each relay event. 

Participating schools include:  Wayne, Pal-mac, Geneva, Newark, Waterloo, Mid-Lakes, Penn Yan, Marcus Whitman, NR- Wolcott, Mynderse, Sodus, Williamson, Gananda, South Seneca-Romulus, East Rochester, Bloomfield, Red Creek, Lyons, Red Jacket, HAC, Naples, Clyde- Savannah, Marion, and Dundee.

Spectators as well as athletes are marveling at the Lyons Junior Senior High School track and field offerings. Gone are the days of sloshing through the mud, sliding on cinders, and thumping into mushy mud.  According to Roger Clark, Lyons Site Coordinator, “It ain’t Berlin, the site of the World Games in 2007, but thanks to Bob Ohmann and the Lyons School District, it is darn close to it!”  Why?

The Lyons track is an all-weather track featuring 8 lanes and a steeplechase. In addition, the competition area features 2 horizontal jump areas with all- weather  surface, 2 high jump areas with all- weather surface,  2 pole jumping areas with all- weather surface, 2 shot put areas with all-weather surface, and 1 discus throwing area with all-weather surface.  

Food and drink will be available at the concession stand located adjacent to the competition area. The concession stand is operated by the Lyons Sport Boosters, moderated by Mr. Steve Veeder, Lyons Athletic Director.   For more information about the Wayne-Finger Lakes Track and Field program, visit their web site at www. wfltrack.org.

    I remember just a few years ago a girl falling while doing the hurdles, she probably is still digging out those ciders out of her skin.
