Newark NY, June 15th,
2013 --
The Newark Pilots (2-3) scored three runs in the sixth inning to come
from behind and defeat the Utica Brewers (2-5) 6-4 at Colburn Park on Saturday
night.
Trailing 4-3, Josh Ludwig
(University of Rochester) knocked a two-run double into right field to give the
Pilots the first lead of the game. Ludwig then scored an insurance run in the
next at-bat when Jeff Edwards (Valparaiso) hit a double of his own.
With one out in the top
of the seventh inning right-handed pitcher Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) took the mound
for the Pilots. Wagner struck out seven of the eight batters he faced to
preserve the two-run lead, earning his first save of the season.
The Brewers took an early
4-1 lead in the top of the second inning. Michael Pierson (Appalachian State),
Jay Gonzalez (Auburn) and Michael McClellan (Georgia Southern) each drove in a
run for Utica.
Eddie Emes (Greater
Allegheny) struggled in his first start of the season. Emes allowed four runs,
three earned, in three innings of work. Tyler Wilson (Buffalo, 1-0) earned the
win in relief, striking out five Brewers in 3 1/3 innings. Russell led the
Pilots with three RBI.
Jorge Pantoja (Alabama
State) was handed the loss for Utica. Pantoja allowed five runs on five hits in
5 2/3 innings. McClellan went 3-for-5 with two RBI.
The Brewers travel back
home to face the Adirondack Trail Blazers on Sunday while the Pilots next home
game is Tuesday June 18th against the Watertown Rams.
