Women on the Water (Wow) to join Peppermint Days Festival |
On July 13, 2013, Women on the
Water (WOW) will paddle the Erie Canal from Newark to Lyons. Launch time is 9:00 AM.
The 8.5 mile paddle will begin at Wide Waters County Park off Route 31 West, stop
and visit the Newark Port and Welcoming Center, pass through Lock E 28B, visit
Historical Lock E56, pass through Locks E 28A and E 27, and end at the Lyons
Dock where WOW participants will become part of the Lyons Peppermint Days
Festival.
WOW is a group of female friends,
mostly from upstate New York, who enjoy the outdoors, especially paddling the
Adirondacks and Central New York. The organization numbers over 70 participants.
Most members “are of an age,” and one member, a septuagenarian, also just became
a member of the Adirondack 46ers, having climbed all 46 high peaks!
In an effort to share their
enthusiasm for kayaking and the great outdoors, WOW, through North Country
Books of Utica, NY, has published a part-guidebook, part-memoir titled, WOW- Women on the Water- Paddling the Adirondacks and Central New York.
The book, WOW, has received the
Adirondack Center for Writing’s Literary Award as the Best Non-Fiction Book of
2012! A portion of the net royalties
from the book will be donated to the Women’s Fund of
Oneida and Herkimer County.
The book is co- authored by Ruth
Dandrea, Kathy DeLong, Carol Moseman, and Bonnie Sanderson. Photos for the
publication were provided by Audrey Mihalko. The women will participate in the
Newark to Lyons paddle.
WOW members will discuss their
interests in kayaking and autograph books at the Lyons dock.
WOW encourages and invites anyone, female
or male, having an interest in the outdoors and kayaking to join them on this
historical paddle. There are no entry or participation fees; however,
participants are encouraged to “sign up” before the launch. For more information, contact rastopper@yahoo.com.
