It was a battle for first place in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division, but the Elmira PIoneers (7-5) could not come out ahead, losing to the Newark Pilots (9-4) by a 17-4 score before 2096 fans at Dunn Field.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Jordan Taylor Radford) walked and came around to score thanks to a wild pitch, a groundout, and another wild pitch. Then, in the following frame, the Elmira offense found a way to give Jeremy Soule (Fairfield) even more run support. Singles by Nick Walker (Old Dominion) and Zac Bellinger (St. Rose) gave the Pioneers a pair of baserunners before a Taylor Hillson (Mansfield) RBI single, a Joe Guaragna (Old Dominion) groundout, and an RBI single by Taylor extended the advantage to 4-0. However, Newark turned the tide from there as the Pioneers suffered their second straight defeat.
The Pioneers got excellent performances by both Jordan Taylor and Taylor Hillson as both had 2 hits and an RBI. Elmira fans can also be happy about the defense of Nick Walker. First Walker made a nice catch on a bloop to right-center field that seemed destined to drop for a base hit. Then he came away with another web gem on a groundball where he ranged far to his right and delivered a long throw with his momentum taking him away from first base to record the out.
The Pioneers will be at home again on Friday as they take on the Watertown Rams at Dunn Field. There will be two exciting promotions at Dunn Field as there will be rally towels sponsored by MetLife and postgame fireworks brought to Pioneers fans by CMS. For tickets head to the Dunn Field Front Office or call 607-734-2690 for more information.
