Newark- After getting swept at home in a double header the night before, the Newark Pilots bounced back in a big way against the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at Colburn Park. The Pilots entered the evening in third place in the West division while the DiamondDawgs sit in second place in the East. Michael Springer (BYU) got the call on the mound to wash the sour taste out of the Pilots mouth after their disappointing two losses to Adirondacks last night. Evan Davis (Marist) got the ball for the DiamondDawgs.
Pilots Power Past 'Dawgs With A Trio Of Four Run Innings 13-0
After being held relatively quite with the bats the last fourteen innings the Newark exploded verse Mohawk Valley and it started with a crooked number in the fourth inning. Already ahead 1-0, Jack Gerstenmaier (Virginia) lead off with a single and after Braxton Wilkes (Kansas St.) was struck out by Davis, six straight Pilots reached bases including five hits. The big knock was an RBI double by Sam Wiggins (Houston Baptist) scoring Wyatt Padgett (BYU) and Tanner Giesel (Southeastern CC). All said in the fourth the Pilots scored four runs on two errors by the DiamondDawgs and increased their lead to 5-0.
Newark put up another four on the scoreboard in the sixth. For the second time on the night Austin Clock (SUNY Cortland) and Zach Wall (Young Harris) lead off with back to back singles. After a fielder’s choice put runners on the corners, the top of the order cashed brought them. Back to back to back RBI base hits by Luis Silverio (Palm Beach CC), Gerstenmaier and Wilks to break the game wide open.
The Pilots added their third four run inning of the game in the seventh.
Springer was masterful on the hill as he worked 7 2/3 shutout innings, giving up only two hits and striking out five to pick up the win. Wall was four for five at the plate to lead the offensive outburst as the Pilots crushed fifteen hits in the 13 to 0 win.
Pilots improve to 14-12 on the season and head to Elmira tomorrow night to start a home and home as they return to Colburn ParkMonday night, first pitch 7:05.
