NEWARK (SEP 26 14)
– The Pal-Mac Red Raiders picked up their third football win, knocking off
Newark on homecoming Friday night, 19-0.
The evening got off
to a rocky start for Newark when the field lights wouldn’t come on and the
homecoming festivities had to be switched around at the last minute while
everyone – it was a large crowd – waited for the right person to come and hit
the right switch.
Pal-Mac did all the
scoring the game would provide in the first half, senior quarterback Bryce
Ryder connecting with Brandon Hawkins on a 20-yard reception that capped a
11-play, 61-yard drive.
The Raiders
capitalized on a botched punt attempt – the ball sailed over kicker DeShon
Cobb’s head for a 21-yard loss – to score in four plays on a shortened field:
Devin Soliday zipped around right end for a 14-yard scoring scamper.
A late drive with
51 yards in pass plays put Pal-Mac in the end zone with just 14 seconds in the
half, Hawkins again hitting paydirt on a 30-yard reception.

Newark was
scrambling from the outset with a quarterback problem. Jacob Kowaleski, who
played the role in modified ball and as a jayvee – but who wasn’t out for
football last year – guided the Reds until he was hurt late in the game. He had
to replace starting QB Anthony Mashewske, who broke his wrist the week prior.
Penalties hurt
Newark throughout the game, but the biggest pain came on the first possession
of the third quarter when Kowaleski took the ball up the left side of the field
for a 70-yard touchdown, only to see the score wiped off the scoreboard because
of a holding call.
Soliday led the
Pal-Mac rushers with 105 yards in 19 carries and a touchdown; Hawkins scored
twice and amassed 80 yards in receptions. Jose Santell made the only pass
reception of the game for Newark – for 47 yards. The Reds drop to 0-4 with the
loss.
