Onondaga, NY- The Geneva Red Wings (21-15) picked up its third straight win with a 6-4 victory over the Onondaga Flames (15-17) on Thursdaynight at Onondaga Community College.
The Red Wings were led by first baseman Will Simoneit (Cornell University) who finished the day 2-4 with four RBI.
Simoneit’s first hit of the day was a two-run single in the third inning off Onondaga starter Zach Kemp (Wells College). The single gave the Red Wings a 3-1 lead.
Stephen Bennett (Canisius College) and Wyatt Myers (University of Buffalo) both knocked in runs with RBI singles as the Flames jumped back in front with a 4-3 lead.
In the fifth inning Simoneit struck again with a two-run single off Kemp to drive in the go-ahead run.
Kemp left the game after hitting the next batter with a pitch, his fourth hit batsman of the game.
Kemp was given the loss (0-3) after an up and down day on the mound. In four and one third innings he allowed five runs on five hits while striking out four.
“I don’t think he threw poorly. He got behind in some counts and [that] kind of gets him into trouble,” said head coach Ryan Stevens. “He’s got good stuff, he’s got a good arm. He’s coming along and he’s 19 years old, that’s a young pitcher.”
Ben Terwilliger (University of Maine) earned his first win of the season allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings of work while striking out three.
Terwilliger also drove in a run with an RBI single in the second inning as Geneva gave up its designated hitter to allow him to bat.
Onondaga begins a three-game road trip on Friday as it heads to Jamestown to face the Jammers (26-9) for the second time in three days. Geneva will get the day off on Friday before hosting the first-place Jammers on Saturday.
